Summer Treats to Keep Your Pup Cool

As the weather heats up, it’s time to find a way to keep your pup cool. Pools, creeks and any body of water may be the first thing to come to mind, but we have some cool treats that can help keep your pup enjoying the summer without being a hot mess. Check out 5 dog treats that are simple to make at home and easy to freeze overnight for your canine companion to enjoy and keep cool!

DIY Pupsicles

Materials:

  • Plastic cup

  • Unsweetened yogurt

  • Blueberries

  • Strawberries

  • Chew sticks

  • Scissors

How to Make: Split the ingredients into 4 even layers. Put a layer of yogurt in the bottom of the cup, layer on some strawberries, add more yogurt, layer on blueberries and top off with more yogurt. The ingredients should fill your cup about 1/4 of the way. Insert the chew stick into the middle of the cup and freeze overnight. Once everything is frozen inside the cup, cut the plastic cup away with scissors and let your pups enjoy.

You and your pup can enjoy this snack! You can replace the chew stick with a pretzel rod, carrot or a bone/treat.

Blueberry Banana Frozen Yogurt for Dogs

Materials:

  • 1 ½ cups plain nonfat yogurt

  • ⅓ cup natural creamy peanut butter

  • ⅓ cup blueberries

  • 1 banana

  • 3 tablespoons ground flaxseed meal

  • 12 small dog bone treats (optional)

  • Cupcake liners

How to Make: In a blender, combine yogurt, peanut butter, blueberries, banana and flaxseed meal and blend until smooth. Pour into cupcake liners in a muffin tin (silicone cupcake liners work best but foil liners also work well), filling halfway. Top each with a mini dog treat bone. Cover with plastic and freeze until solid, about 4 hours. Let the treat stand at room temperature for about 5 minutes before serving, especially if you used paper liners as this will help to peel them off. Remove the liners and pop the spare ones in a freezer bag for up to 2 weeks.

Frozen Strawberry and Banana Smoothie Dog Treats

Materials:

  • 2 cups of sliced strawberries OR a 16 oz frozen bag of strawberries

  • 1 ½ cups plain Greek low fat yogurt

  • 1 sliced banana

  • ¼ cup of skim milk

  • 3 tablespoons of honey

How to Make: Blend all of the ingredients in a blender until smooth. Pour the mixture into molds of your choice or an ice cube tray. Freeze for at least 4 hours. Pop them out of the molds and enjoy. To store, use zip lock bags or tupperware for a tight seal.

Apple and Chicken Pup Pops

Materials:

  • Unsalted chicken broth

  • Apples

  • Bully stick, chew sticks or a bone treat

  • Small paper or plastic cups

How to Make: Fill up the cups with broth and put slices of apples into the broth cups. Place sticks into the center of the cups and freeze for a couple of hours. Peel the cups away and serve to your pups. TIP: Try using some warm water to get the paper cups off.

Copycat Frosty Paws

Materials:

  • 1 banana

  • 32 oz. plain Greek yogurt, unsweetened

  • 2 tablespoons of peanut butter

  • Small size dog biscuits

  • Ice cube tray

How to Make: Put banana, yogurt and peanut butter into a blender and blend until smooth. Put the mixture into ice cube trays and add a dog treat to each mixture for a tasty handle. Allow at least 4 hours for the mixture to freeze. Store leftovers in a zip lock freezer bag.
